If you want to enjoy the trek then the 1st week of May to June end and mid-September to October end is the best season.

Trek grade

It is a moderate-difficult trek that requires good physical fitness. This trek is easily completed in 7 days.

The total trekking distance of trek is 40.2 kilometers.

Temperature in May, June

During the day the temperature is 15° to 20° C, while at night it is 4° to 7° C. Once you reach at highest camp i.e., RatiPheri the temperature during the day is 5° C to 10° C and at night 3° to -2° C.

Temperature in Sept and Oct

At the time of day, the temperature is 13° to 20° C and at night 2° to 7° C. After reaching the highest camp RatiPheri, the temperature reaches to 3° C to 10° C in the day and 3° to 5° C at night.

Rain

From early July to mid-September, it’s time for rain. However, by late August and early September, road landslides also start but get repaired in a few days only.

Snow

From May in Saruwas Thatch, you will find high snow but gradually the snow starts to decrease from June. In September, there is very little snow.

In the upper region, the winter snowfall starts from the first week of October but also begins to melt in a few days.

Day Wise Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 : Shimla to Bwata​

  • Altitude: 7,700 feet
  • The drive is about 205km that will take almost 10 hours
  • All the trekkers will be picked up from Shimla old bus stand at 06:00 am in a four-wheeler like travller or any other vehicle’s
  • Only dinner is included, not the breakfast and lunch
  • Night stay will be organized in the Home Stay, Guest House
  • Last Network till Chanshal Pass
  • Last ATM Rorhu

This will be the first day of your journey and instead of trekking, first, you will reach Bawta by vehicle. On the way, the weather is going to be very cold but also humid at the same time. Get ready to experience breathtaking views of nature and hills that will definitely leave you stunned. If you are a nature lover then don’t forget to keep your camera ready because the scenic views are hard to explain in words. You will be travellin to Bawta through Rorhu. Rohru can be described as a town on the river Pabbar. It is located approximately 110km from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. You cross the Chaaisheel valley while traveling towards Rupin Pass basecamp – Bawta. Instead of travelling from Dehradun – Dhaula as per the traditional Rupin Pass trek itinerary, In the past, the road through Chainsheel Valley was horrible. It’s now much better. We prefer driving from Shimla to Bawta. It is a beautiful and pleasant way to start the trek.The road from Rorhu splits in two routes, The first road leads to Janglik which is the base camp for Buran ghati trek, while the second goes to Bawta base cammp od rupin pass. The drive will be through the beautiful and scenic Chainsheel Valley, this the road that leads to Bawta base camp. You will be served lip-smacking meals that will surely regain your strength, after a long 8 – 10 hours journey.

Day 02: BAWTA TO JAKHA

  • Altitude: 8,700 ft
  • It is a 5km trek with a difficult level of ascent and steep climb
  • Within 04 hours, you will reach Jakha from Bawta
  • Hot lunch at the campsite and tea & Maggi stalls are available on the way
  • Moderate climb till Jiskun and then descent till wooden bridge and zig-zag trail till Jakha
  • Selwan Khad is the last water point
  • Night in a homestay or tents

Get up early in the morning and witness the mesmerizing sunrise from the mountains. On day 2, you will be crossing the highest and last village of this outstanding Rupin Pass trek. The trail is going to be a continuous ascent for almost 4-5 hours because you will be trekking 05km. So, recharge yourself with a healthy breakfast to begin your trek on the zig-zag mixed track. While trekking, you will reach the new wooden bridge where you will end up wondering how beautiful a path like this is built from the rock face. With the trail terrain and the surroundings varying quickly, your trek to Jhaka is going to be fascinating and enjoyable at the same time. Along with the zig-zag trail, you will gradually trek through the mixed dense forest. As you walk inside the village of Jhaka, you will find that villagers consider animals to be holy due to which they avoid eating meat. You can refill your water bottle at Selwan Khad because this is the last water point of day 4. At night, you will be staying in tents at Jakha from where you can witness nature at its best.

Day 03: Jakha to Dandreyash Thatch ( Lower water fall )​

  • Altitude: 11,680 ft
  • It is an 11km long trek that will take 8 hours.
  • Long walk but easy and most walk is along the river so you will enjoy
  • Bottles can be filled from the river
  • snow bridges and wildflowers
  • Delicious packed lunch will be provided
  • Stay in a tent at night

Waking up at the campsite in Jakha is definitely a real ecstasy because the morning views are beyond your expectations. This means your day is going to start with a beautiful ambiance. On the 5th day, you will walk out of the campsite and trek for 11kms within 08 hours. You will be carrying lunch for the day. The track to Dhandreyash Thatch will pass through the field but will ultimately lead you to an amazing mountain forest. As you walk through the forest trail, take a turn to the section of the trek which is covered with snow patches, giving an attractive view of nature. You will come across a snow bridge that further takes you over river Rupin. The narrow track from here will soon lead you to another attractive wooden bridge. By now, the river, the surroundings as well as the terrain will give you a great sense of adventure and excitement. The moment you cross streams, you will start walking on rocky ground and rocks with the river on your left side. In this way, you will enter into another dense forestry of Rhododendron where you will find Rhododendron trees of different colors. After trekking for a few kilometers more, you will reach Saurwas Thatch. Relax here and get indulged in the different beautiful shades of nature. You will also get a stunning view of a tranquil U-shaped valley in the middle of trees along with the Rupin waterfall.

Further in this route only, you will find the snow patches on the mountainside. The sacred silver cane trees also known as Bhoj Trees will escort you to the entry of woodlands. As you move upwards through the forests, you will finally reach the edge of a U-shaped valley from where you can witness the breathtaking views of nature that are sure to leave you stunned and also enthrall you for a few seconds. Now, through the gorgeous and yellow meadows, we will be moving downward to reach down the valley. After crossing a series of snow-bridges, you will reach the middle of Dhanderas Thatch valley. After reaching here, you will relax and involve in some exciting fun activities organized by us. You will also get the opportunity to relish and admire the biggest known pastures of the Himalayan Range i.e., Dhanderas Thatch.

04: Acclimatization, rest, buffer day at Dandreyash Thatch ( Lower water fall )

05: DANDREYASH THATCH TO UPPER WATERFAL

  • Altitude: 13,120 ft.
  • It is a picturesque day of the trek with 3.5km, 305 hours
  • You can refill your bottle from small streams
  • Moderate level of ascent along with complicated climbing trail around the snow patches
  • Do not get on the snow patch directly
  • Hot lunch at the campsite

As you will start your trek towards the ‘Upper Waterfall’, the yellow flowers of ‘Marigold’ bloom in overabundance which is sure a treat to your eyes. We will provide you technical equipment and inform you about all the essential precautions beforehand to save you from altitude problems. We will also conduct a small session to teach you all the skills required for trekking in the snow like sidestepping, sliding on snow, and cutting through the snow. First, you will reach the lower waterfall by cutting ice using an ice axe. Once you reach the lower waterfall, you will find a stunning snow bridge over the Rupin river and to reach here you have to pass several climbs. After reaching this bridge, you will find an interesting surrounding that will not only boost up your energy but also astound you at the same time.

Although there is a steep climb but once you reach the upper waterfall camp located at an altitude of 13,100 ft., you will find that it is worth your efforts. Don’t forget to have a look at things visible from this camp, stand amid the bizarre beauty, and get ready to have a blissful feeling of fulfillment. After reaching this place, you will get enough confidence and strength to trek further for the Rupin Pass on the next day. Although day 6 will be adventurous but the next day is going to be even more thrilling and full of excitement. After crossing the bridge, you are all set to relax and enjoy yourself at your campsite & have dinner.

Day 06: Upper Waterfall to Ronti Gad, Cross Rupin Pass

  • Altitude: 13, 420 ft
  • It is a 9km trek and most exciting day where you will pass through a tough level of ascent
  • Till the pass, there is a steep ascent and then steep descend
  • You will take almost 10 hours trekking
  • By 04:30 am, leave the camp and carry your hot water from camp as water sources are limited
  • Packed lunch will be provided
  • In the late evening, we will be reaching Ronti gad

On day 6, you need to wake up early in the morning as it is going to be a long trekking day. You will be served breakfast and then start the trekking. Rupin Pass is at a height of 4,650 meters and the track really exciting that you will definitely enjoy. In order to ensure safe trek, make sure to carry all the necessary trekking equipment with yourself. Start climbing to Rati Pheri which is a steep ascent and after reaching there don’t forget to take a break for almost 10-15 minutes because the extraordinary changes in nature are a great delight because you will get to discover so much of nature in just a single trek. Trek through the field which is covered in snow and get ready to have the first spectacular sight of Rupin Pass. You might think that it is beyond reach but trekking to pass is really thrilling and something that is beyond your expectations.

Get ready to walk through the rocky area, you will also find loose rocks on the way and even the stones can fall from above, so be careful and follow all the instructions of the guide strictly. It is better to climb individually so that you do not face any kind of difficulty. This steep ascent might make you feel tired but standing on the summit will definitely uplift your mood. The first thing that you will see after reaching the top is colorful flags flowing with the wind along with a wonderful view of the Dhauladhar Range. After spending some amazing time on the summit, start planning your descent. Descending is really fun and slides down in eagerness and reaches the flattened track that will further lead to the pastures of Ronti Gad. Remember these pastures are quite different from the ones that you have witnessed earlier during the trek. Ronti Gad is a big meadow because it is the sight of snow-covered mountains as well as meadows thriving in that looks captivating. Since this day will be quite long and hectic, so after having dinner you will rest in tents.

Day 07: Ronti Gad to Sangla & Back to Shimla

  • Altitude: 8,800
  • Last day of trekking, you will trek for 12km
  • Till Sangla, moderate level of descent
  • Several water points on the way
  • You will reach Sangla by 1-2 pm in the afternoon
  • cab will leave from Sangla at 3 pm and reach Shimla by 1 am in the night
  • Drive back to Shimla (9-10 hours)
  • Make your bookings for a hotel in Shimla accordingly

Today is the last day of the trek which will be a downward climb but you need to be careful as the height of the trail drops quickly. Although our team will teach you again to adapt to these sharp descendants in order to climb your way downward in an easy way without hurting yourself but you need to be careful. You need to know that the trail will start with a mild climb but turn into an easy walk as you head towards the Ronti Gad valley. After coming across 1500ft in height, you will exit the narrow gorge and witness astounding sights of Mt. Kinner Kailash that are mind-blowing. From here you won’t be able to see the views of pass at all. Get ready to trek through the pine forest and you will also reach a village where you can witness beautiful orchards of apple as well as wooden houses. Though there are several trails for Sangla from Sangla Kanda but it is better to choose the track that passes through the forest of Blue Pines. The ending trail is wide and also perfectly defined but descendants quickly to Sangla. A half an hour of sharp descend is following by a short climb that takes you directly to Sangla via Baspa village. This will mark the end of your trek journey. With a private vehicle, it is easy to reach Shimla from Sangla which is almost 09 hours drive. Before arriving in Shimla, make sure to get your bookings done in the hotel beforehand to avoid last minute mess.

Food Provided by Us During the Rupin Pass Trek

We provide only Indian vegetarian food and mainly your meal is going to contain Indian bread, vegetable, lentils and Rice along with delicious dessert. During your trek, we will serve three meals a day including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the evening, you will also be served tea & snacks and lip-smacking soup before dinner. If it will be a long day of trekking, you will be given a packed snack.

After doing a lot of research on the nutritional requirements for the trekkers, we prepare the menu. Before putting all the meals together, we also consider altitude gained and weather.

The meal served by us while trek is perfectly balanced with the right amounts of calories, carbohydrates, vitamins, protein, fiber, and minerals. You need to know that all our cooks have great expertise in cooking and have undergone thorough training. So, get ready to enjoy delectable and lip-smacking dishes during your trek. You will be served with lemon tea in the tent in order to start your day with a refreshed feeling. Before leaving the campsite for trekking, you will be given a hot finger-licking breakfast like upma, Aallu Prantha, Besan Chilla, Poha, Daliya,  Corn flakes, Maggie, along with tea or coffee.

In case, your trek will be longer one then we also offer some fresh local fruits such as apples and even healthy drinks like Frootie or Maaza. In the afternoon, you will be served simple & healthy lunch, while at around 04:00 pm, you will be given tea and a light evening breakfast. After you reach your campsite at night, you will be served a hot and delightful dinner. What should you pack for the Rupin Pass Trek?

Whenever we go on trek or start packing things one should remember the packing pattern i.e. either you start from head to foot or foot to head, this way there will be rare chance that you will forget the items to pack, so go step by step.

  1. Backpack

Make sure your backpack should be comfortable neither too big nor to small and for a week trek 60-70 liters of backpack should be enough to hold all your belongings. Ensure that your backpack has good hip & Shoulder support and pockets should be accessible quickly.

  1. Daypack

All trekkers should keep in mind that daypack is very important, this will be a great help to you while on trek, also every single day you won’t be carrying you backpack therefore for day excursion , shorter hikers, sightseeing you can carry your stuff in it.

  1. Footwear
  • Trekking shoes: Preferably water proof, ankle support.
  • Walking / Hiking sandals: This can be used off trek i.e. in the morning and evening hours, basically to get your feet rest from heavy boots, sometime used for crossing streams and rivers, it’s more comfortable and safe than crossing barefoot or wetting your boots.
  • Sneakers (Optional): For normal driving days or can use  around the camp
  • Socks (3-4 Pairs) – Make sure to choose material wisely, it should be quick drying, warm and comfortable.
  1. Clothing’s
  • Hiking / trekking jacket: Carry good quality layer jackets
  • Hiking pants: Check some kind of long nylon blend, light and quick drying pants. Warm covers ups like fleece-lined tracksuit pants or ski pant.
  • Undergarments as per your habitual requirement
  • T-Shirts and Shorts (3-4 Warm comfortable)
  • Ordinary Shirt / T-shirt – Just in case everything gets wet this will help for roaming around.
  • Long Sleeve shirt – can be used as a base layer on colder days
  • Socks – at least 4-5 pairs
  • Leggings – Can be used specially chilling morning and evening , to keep your body warm
  • Thermals – get 2 pairs of thermals, this will be great need a body to keep it warm.
  • Buff / Balaclava – This is a must to carry to cover your neck and this item is an ideal solution to keep your neck / throat warm.
  • Beanie Cap- Very helpful item for colder and windy days should carry 1, also sometime when its freezing cold you can use it a night as well.
  • Hiking Hat- this will basically help during the day time specially from the sun rays, make sure it has a strip so that wind does not below is far from your headJ..
  • Gloves – 01 pair will be enough to keep your hand warm and nice.
  1. Rain wears
  • Rain Coat and Pant – Carry a pair of it to protect you from the rain OR
  • Rain Poncho – during long rains, the waterproof jackets starts leaking but poncho does get work in keeping you dry, so choose accordingly.
  • Rain covers: Some small water proof to cover your backpack and daypack as well for your gadgets.

  1. Personal First aid Kit and Energy – below are some common medicine generally required / used during your adventure trip, however please consult your doctors prior.

  • Cotton and elastic bandages and sterile gauze pad for larger wounds
  • Latex gloves used when its wound bleeds
  • Medicine for Diarrhea (Upset stomach)

9.Compulsory Documents to Carry

These are files needed to be submitted at Forest Department before ypur trek. With no of these, you will not be permitted to trek .Original and photocopy of government photo identity card. Carry Id’s like adhaar, voter id, etc.

Trek Cost Inclusion

  • Stay is included on all days of the trek ( from Jiskun to Ronti Gad ).
  • Home stay will be at Jiskun and Jakha on other days you will be staying in tents (2 per tent).
  • All meals from dinner at Jiskun on Day 1 to lunch on Day 7 at Ronti Gad are included. Meals are simple, nutritious and vegetarian.
  • All the trek equipment will be included like a sleeping bag, kitchen & dining tent, utensils, mattress, tent, toilet tent, and crampon (if needed).

    Note:- Tents and sleeping bags are custom made of Trekup India which are tested on high altitudes by our mountain expert trek team.

  • Mules or porter charges to carry private baggage (Offload Charges for bag 600 per day, per bag. Note: bag weight should not be more than 11 kg.
  • Any kind of emergency evacuation charges 

Trek Logistics

Pickup point will be New Shimla bus stand and pickup time will be 6.30 AM.

Note: We will share exact pickup location and driver details on whatsapp group, apart from it our transport manager will be also present at the pickup point to assist you.

We will drop you off at Shimla bus stand max by 10 P.M on the final day. We advice you to make your departure bookings after 11.30 P.M.

How To Reach Shimla?

We are delighted to welcome you on the Rupin Pass Trek. It is a great buffet of some of our most popular treks. It is an amazing trek, but you must make sure your travel plans are in order.

Here are some tips to help you plan your trip.

Day zero (the day before Trek Day 1): Book your Flight to Chandigarh and Delhi.Take a bus from  Chandigarh to shimla, if you are in Chandigarh. Book an overnight bus from Delhi to Shimla

Day 1: Shimla to Bawta / Jiskun by drive. Arrive at Bawta / Jiskun approximately 10 to 11 hours away from Shimla (201 kms). We organize transportation from Old Shimla Bus Stand at 5.30 am and then to Bawta / Jiskun. The cost is around 12,000 for a Trax Cruiser and around Rs. 15,000 per Tempo Traveller. Day2: Bawta to Jakha

Day3: Jakha to Dandreyash Thatch

Day 4: Acclimatization, rest, buffer day at Dandreyash Thatch

Day5: Dandreyash Thatch to Upper Waterfall

Day6: Upper Waterfall to Ronti Gad, cross Rupin Pass

Day7: Ronti Gad to Sangla & Back to Shimla

  1. The trek price include transport from Shimla to Bawta / Jiskun and return from Sangla to Shimla, Trekup India will arrange cab for you only, cab will be on sharing basis or you can also return through bus also, returing through us is most economical option below we have mentioned all details about return transportation options.
  2. The trek price does not include food during transport from Shimla to Bawta and return.

Sangla – Shimla – Delhi via road

Option 1. Sangla to Shimla by cab , then on to Delhi via bus

Rupin Pass trek ends at Sangla about 1pm on the seventh day. Sangla is a tiny tourist village located in Himachal. From Sangla we will organize a taxi ride to Shimla. The cost for cabs is approximately Rs. 9000 for an SUV which 5-6 trekkers could take home. You can choose departing for Shimla early, around 2.00 pm and returning at 1.00 am the next morning.

If you would prefer not travel at night, then stay over at Sangla and depart around 6.00 am the next morning. You should arrive at Shimla in the afternoon around 4.00 evening.
Buses begin at 5 am at the Shimla Old bus stop. There are buses departing in Shimla and heading to Delhi each 15 minute interval. Shimla to Delhi is between 10 and 12 hours via bus.

Take your flight from Delhi with the journey of 12 hours in your mind.

Option 2. Sangla – Shimla – Delhi  bus

There are two local buses running from Sangla to Shimla –

5.30 pm – you could go back the following evening after you complete the trek. You should get to Shimla at 6.00 am the next morning.

6.30 am – take the bus later in the day to reach Shimla later in the evening.

Tip: Tips: Taking a bus from Sangla to Shimla is the most cost-effective option.

Buses begin at 5am at the Shimla Old bus stop. There are buses departing in Shimla and heading to Delhi at every fifteen minutes. Shimla to Delhi takes between 10 and 12 hours by bus.

Important points to be aware of:

  1. When you are getting to Bawta / Jiskun it is recommended to arrive earlier and then stay in Shimla (Day Zero). Have a restful night in preparation for your journey the following or next day.
  2. After you have returned from the trek, don’t book any train tickets or flight on the 7th day departing from Shimla, Kalka, Chandigarh or Delhi. Your return ticket should be purchased on the day 9 – 10.

Mode Of Transportation

By Air:-

The Jubbarhatti Airport is located 22 kilometers from Shimla. It has excellent connections to other cities via air. You can also access other nearby airports like Chandigarh Airport or Delhi Airport.

By rail :-

By Rail Kalka is the nearest station and connects the city to different parts of the country via rail. You can get trains from cities such as Delhi and Calcutta. You can also take the toy train from Kalka station. Or hire private taxis to explore the beautiful city of Kalka.

By Road:-

By roads, Shimla can be connected to cities such as Chandigarh and Delhi, Dehradun, Kalka, and Dehradun. To reach the hill station, you can hire taxis or state buses. Regular bus services are available from nearby cities like Kullu (235km), Manali (228 km), Delhi (390 km), Ambala (154 km) . Luxury buses and cabs can be taken from the capital of India for a comfortable ride.

Busses From Delhi to Simla:-

Get on the bus from the ISBT Kashmiri Gate (Delhi) to the Old Shimla Bus Stand or it is also known in the form of Victory Tunnel (ask the bus conductor for specific directions on this). It’s a 10- to 11-hour bus ride between Delhi up to Shimla. Avoid buses that go to Shimla ISBT in Tutikandi. The pick-up point  is from Old Shimla Bus Stand. The distance from the Tutikandi ISBT to the Old bus stop is approximately 5 kilometers. Taxis can cost you by 300-500 rupees for the early morning departure.

Note – Find a bus that departs Delhi about 9.00 pm.

We advice you to use HRTC and Himachal Tourism buses. They typically operate according to schedule.
