What is a Multi Tyre Roller?

A multi tyre roller is a type of compaction equipment that uses loads of rubber tyres to squish down all sorts of materials. These tyres are arranged in rows that overlap each other to make sure the pressure is spread evenly all the way across the width of the roller. Because the tyres are pneumatic, it’s super easy to compact all sorts of materials like asphalt, soil and so on. And unlike those smooth drum rollers or padfoot rollers, multi tyre rollers are a pretty different beast.

How Do Multi Tyre Rollers Work?

Multi tyre rollers work by applying loads of pressure through their pneumatic tyres. All that weight of the machine gets spread out across the tyres, and then those tyres pass all that pressure on to whatever material they’re squishing. By relying on this ‘kneading’ action, multi tyre rollers can achieve a much higher level of compaction than static rollers can. This kneading action also helps seal the surface down, which is particularly useful for compacting asphalt – and that’s exactly what makes them such a great choice for that kind of work.

Multi Tyre Rollers vs Other Types of Rollers

When comparing multi-tyred rollers to other types of rollers like smooth drum rollers or steel drum rollers, the main difference is the way they compact the material. Smooth drum rollers work using static weight and a bit of vibration, but multi tyre rollers work using that kneading action we just talked about. All this makes pneumatic rollers much better at producing a smooth, sealed surface – especially on asphalt layers – which is a big part of why they’re so popular on construction sites. Plus, they can be hired with roller hire or conplant services, so it’s not all doom and gloom. The benefits of using multi tyre rollers are pretty clear.
