What is an Excavator?

An excavator, also known as a digger, is a piece of heavy construction equipment that’s used for all sorts of excavation tasks, including moving overburden and digging foundations. It’s got a boom, dipper, bucket and a cab all mounted on a rotating platform called the “house”. Excavators are used for jobs like digging trenches, grading land, tearing down buildings, and lifting heavy loads, so they’re a pretty big deal in the world of earthmoving and construction.

Types of Excavators

There’s a real range of excavators out there, each one designed for specific jobs. Mini excavators are small, usually under 6 tonnes, and are perfect for jobs like landscaping and residential construction where space is tight. Mid-sized excavators, which can range from 6 to 40 tonnes, are good all-around machines for general construction, utility work and trenching. And then there are the big boys, which are over 40 tonnes and are built for heavy-duty jobs like mining, major earthmoving and demolition.

How Excavator Size is Measured

Excavator size is usually measured by its operating weight, which is expressed in tonnes and is a good indicator of how much digging power it’s got. You also need to consider the bucket capacity, which is the amount of dirt it can move in one go, and the breakout force, which is how much power it takes to get the bucket out of the ground.
